W2K: 'SIGHT IS BEAUTIFUL' POSTER CONTEST
In November and December 2008, over 200 Jefferson Elementary School students engaged in Waikiki 2000 Club level poster contest entitled, "Sight Is Beautiful."  Kindergarten to Fifth graders interpreted the theme.  Some drew
pictures of the beautiful ocean life, others depicted the  importance of practicing safety measures to preserve one's eye sight.  Fourteen classes participated in this project, each class had a winner.  In addition, the Club's committee selected four division winners.  Judges, Lions J Ching, M Luna, L Morneau, J and T Offner, selected the winners based on originality, theme, color, composition  and neatness, and labeling of the title on the poster. The tie-breaker judge was DG Shannon.

On Monday, January 26, Co-chairs of this project, Lions Ching and Morneau, recognized the poster winners at the school assembly held at the cafeteria. It was heartwarming to see each student hold his/her poster with pride as
Lion Linda called each recipient to stage.  Prizes included a stuffed lion complimentary of Eye Bank Executive Director, Shawn Wofford, a certificate of recognition, Walmart gift certificate ($5.00 each classroom winner and $10.00 each for the division winners.)

The success of this invaluable project is due to the help of Jefferson School's principal, Mrs. Vivian Hee.   Lions June and Linda look forward to coordinating this project again next year.
WK2 PROUD LIONS

On January 11, 2009, the Lions of Waikiki 2000 held their meeting at Waioli Tea room in Manoa.  Lion Marie Luna organized the event to help the new  Lions meet one of their requirements to be "Proud Lions."  As membership director for the club, Lion Marie accompanied by District Governor Shannon Ching conducted an orientation session covering international, district, and club information.  It was a fun activity: both veteran and new Lions learned something new from the orientation.     The event was also to honor W2K Lions:  Lion Richard Sakoda received an
award for perpetuating our club as a charter member who continues to provide leadership and who continues to recruit new members.  Lion Jerold Sakoda, a charter member and the first president of the club, was awarded the Melvin
Jones fellow plaque.  DG Shannon, also a charter member, received a pin for membership recruitment.  Congratulations to the founders of our club.   The Waikiki 2000 thrives with the blending of its charter members, new lions, and their guests.
